Lake Adventure

There had been big talk and practice for Desmond’s first camping trip, but unfortunately mother nature wasn’t quite cooperating for a the perfect fall overnight (rain, low temps). Dad had taken the day off to chaperone Des’ class trip day to the very same pumpkin patch as Monday, so he floated the idea of having a special adventure- going out to the lake, canoeing, picnic, hiking. Des’s decision was instant, and turns out, it was the perfect fall day for a lake adventure.

Dad has been canoeing a lot in his life, including the merit badge for which he tipped a canoe over on purpose, flooded it, then emptied the water from it while treading water. But Des sitting ready mid-hull gave dad pause, much like that first time driving your first born home from the hospital and fear reassesses one’s driving skills. Instinct kicked in quickly though and the first father/son canoe shoved off.

What do you do after the newness of paddling in the middle of a lake wears off? Go scout the coast for wildlife. “Ahoy captain, there be turtles!”

It was also quite windy- the canoe was facing north when dad had pulled the paddle out of the water and due west in this picture.

Arrowhead Lake is about 25 minutes east of Council Bluffs and the first spot dad camped with grandpa, just beyond the right side of the photo-

There will be other days for learning camp cooking, this was a picnic for maximum fun and yumminess

A core memory for sure.

“Sure Des, you can walk down and throw stuff in the lake.” This could have ended poorly, but didn’t.

Dad: While I felt in denial of this adventurous boy turning four (mourning or whatnot the bumbling toddler days clearly past), today’s new experience left me so giddy for the future. Though the perfect fall weekend for his first night camping wasn’t in the forecast this year, it was the perfect fall day for a lake, canoe (!), picnic, hike and nature exploration. My soul is finally at peace with our Desi turning four- and all the new days, treks and conversations it will bring.

Eleanor wails on the outdoor marimba at Fontenelle Forest

Lots to see and explore for those not inclined to hike the distance

A nice hike, though everyone was soon ready to go home for some R&R

She usually pretty good about “nice touches” with the dog

It’s been a while since mom has made her amazing lasagna. Eleanor’s affinity for all-things tomato held its course as she gobbled up two servings.

With the rain subsiding and cool temperatures remaining, it was a good morning for a family hike. Hiking with a toddler is a non-linear cycle: sprint, wander, backtrack, plead to resume forward motion, saying good-bye to all living and non-living creatures. Repeat.

Helping open the envelope to see if he’ll have a new baby brother or sister…

Not sure if it was the recent rains and temperatures, but just an unusual amount of snails alongside the trail and crawling atop the grass. Des had quite the keen eye for new snails

Jump in the puddles? Sure, why not.

With all the sprinting, zig-zagging and backtracking, it’s no wonder why he was ready for a piggyback ride

Memorial Day 2016

It was a good morning for a hike at Fontenelle Forest and Des was all about running through the trees

“Come on son, let’s put those couch climbing skills to use”

After nap time, it was time to cool off poolside. This is about as far in as he ventured though (dad needs to preheat it out in the sun for a bit next time)

Long Island

The trip to New York started out a bit groggy. Des did not sleep very well the night before and had not yet had a nap when dad picked him up at daycare for lunch. Result: the first instance of Des eating while sleeping. Bags were quickly loaded though and it was off to the airport.

Des really seemed to enjoy looking out the window with dad during takeoff and inflight.

After several delays to an already long layover in Chicago, the connecting flight was finally in the air. Des was a champ with all the travel, with each leg coinciding with nap time or bed time. He didn’t even flinch during the rough landing into LaGuardia.

Our friend Katie graciously picked us up at the airport and we were soon off to their new house in Huntington Station. Des slept as the rest of us stayed up late and caught up.

The next morning we took a leisurely stroll to a neighborhood bakery for the first of many bagels on our trip. Later in the afternoon, we drove up with some of Katie & Stephen’s friends to Northport.

It was humbling to see Katie’s theatrical training allow her to whiz through Dr. Seuss’ tounge-tying Fox in Sox with nary a stumble. Mom and dad are still practicing.

Later in the afternoon everyone hiked up to Jayne’s Hill, the tallest point on Long Island. The poem Paumanok by Walt Whitman is inscribed on a boulder marking the peak. Des napped in his carrier with his hat shading him a la Indiana Jones.

Back in January or February, Des really didn’t like getting into his carseat. Of many random songs dad sung to soothe him, Day-O somehow struck a calming chord. One of the daily rituals has now been singing Day-O while leaving the house in the morning. Dad pulled it out for bedtime tonight, featuring Katie:

The next morning we were up early and joining Katie on her commute into the city. Des was fascinated with the Long Island Rail Road. At Atlantic Terminal, we transferred to the subway for Brooklyn, Katie continued on into Manhattan.
