Bats Over Omaha 2018
For the first time in several years, the timing was just right to take the kids to the annual bat release at Joslyn. Each winter, a non-profit accepts calls for wildlife removal. The animals commonly need cared for, then in the case of the bats, returned back into the wild.
The welcoming committee was out in full force
Ella and her pa
The coffee filter craft project was a bat (?)
Baby’s first deli sandwich
And for a treat, a mini cupcake
After dinner, Eleanor was fueled-up and ready to go run.
And run.
Here comes the high stepper.
That moment “stepping down” by way of jumping, when the suprise dawns on Ella- “yup, you’re falling”
Des gets a close-up view of one of the stars of the evening
She’ll forever keep the older three on their toes
And now she’s beginning to wind down
Des and Viv look on at the volunteer holding her arms out with bats attached, waiting to fly away
They were mesmorized
One fella need to take a breather before trying to take off again, but eventually made it

The kids get some special treats and fun with mom while dad’s away camping. Mom’s clearly a pro, starting with ice cream first followed by physical activity. Shortly after this photo, Eleanor started screaming because she thought Des was taking her gelato. Des is eating avocado gelato with sprinkles.
Perfect spring weather for a ice-cream-fueled trip to the park

Random Thursday night at Block 16, Des both discovers and frets about the random small objects on the top of his veggie burger. Much like Anthony Bourdain, mom and dad feels this is a resounding success. Plus, Des ended up liking the “bun seeds”
Eleanor looks on, but could care less what’s happening as long as there’s fries involved
Although he also liked it by itself, Des makes a “combo” with the B16 dragon sauce and some ketchup

Eleanor wails on the outdoor marimba at Fontenelle Forest
Lots to see and explore for those not inclined to hike the distance
A nice hike, though everyone was soon ready to go home for some R&R
She usually pretty good about “nice touches” with the dog
Eleanor sporting her new/hand-me-down kicks from Viv
It’s been a while since mom has made her amazing lasagna. Eleanor’s affinity for all-things tomato held its course as she gobbled up two servings.

It was a good morning to go see Metamorphosis at Lauritzen Gardens, an exhibit constructed of found, recycled and reused plastic objects. In the primary atrium, there was one installation akin to a upcycled Chihuly sculpture-
That was pretty exciting, but so were the koi fish 😉
Ella’s first time walking around the botanical gardens
Des requested his photo in front of the rainbow piece
Outside there was a collection of processed recycled materials, a look at waste in a new light
Mom really did pick out the world’s cutest rain jacket
Once outside and able to run, Des would occasionally look to 1) verify he didn’t run too far, 2) wave at everyone else from the future
Nearly at the half-way mark, Eleanor is getting tired and decides to shift modes of transportation
Taking (short) steps like a pro
An excellent pre-nap outing
Later on it warmed up sufficiently for the annual Earth Day festival in Elmwood park. Eleanor has her headphones on during the Mynabirds set, but is clearly more interested in goofing around with grandma
We’re still not sure Ella fully comprehended that she was touching a real rabbit. Like, she knows what it is, but the fact that she’s actually getting to pet one like she does Max
Des gets in on the rabbit action as well
It just doesn’t get more adorable than toddlers petting puppies
The now twice-annual post-Earth Day taco outing. Next year, definitely the 24th St. favorite over Mula
